The word 'healing' is common to us in different situations. Its definition and trajectory can be different based on the person and the event that they?re healing from. So, to understand this concept with nuance, let?s define what the word ?healing? means. In simple words, healing can refer to getting well again after having suffered, either from a physical injury or an emotional event. In this article, we will be diving deep into what healing means on an emotional level and how it actually works neurologically.
Healing from traumatic experiences has been a topic of interest widely in the present world, whether it be between friends, in psychology classes, or on social media platforms Trauma can refer to any event in your life that changes how you perceive human concepts (e.g., love, friendships, relationships, social interactions), how you think about and behave in them, as well as how you form your coping mechanisms in or around that situation. Trauma can stem from a single distressing situation, such as a natural disaster, accident, or assault, or from prolonged exposure to stressful situations like ongoing abuse or neglect. This is where emotional healing comes in.
Emotional healing often includes acknowledging the presence of distressing emotions stemming from a stressful life event(s), understanding where the feelings come from, what they mean, and how to move forward toward mental wellness despite the experience of a painful situation. So, it?s fair to say that healing is a process; often circular, cyclical and nonlinear. We constantly hear people advise others to simply ?let go? (of a person, of the situation, of your feelings) to heal. But what does that mean? And how do you do it without pretending you?ve done it when in reality you?re simply ignoring it all?
It is understood that any emotional event requires your ?emotional brain areas? to perform their respective function for healing to take place, but did you know that there are neurological functions involved in the process of letting go in healing, specifically? The human brain has the ability to learn and build resilience in any given situation, and it happens through the process of neuroplasticity.
Neuroplasticity is the brain?s ability to change its activity in response to stimuli; this change may be in the form of reorganising itself structurally (a physical change in how the brain areas look) as well as functionally (how it processes things). It refers to the capacity of neurons and neural networks in the brain to modify their connections and behaviour in response to new information, sensory stimulation, development, damage, or dysfunction.
So, when you experience a particularly stressful situation ? how you process it, its components and the people related to it, and how you cope with it ? all of these factors play a role in reorganizing your neural networks about this specific kind of situation. And this is done by your brain every time you encounter distressing events that make you consciously think about ways to cope. Kind of like a mental ?update.?
Your brain does this in order to prepare you to cope with future difficult circumstances that may have any or multiple elements like this one. As much as your brain is simply trying to protect you from harm by changing how it works, sometimes, the changes it makes for survival stick further than just that stressful event. It starts affecting your sense of self, your relationships and even your attitudes towards your work and responsibilities. When you?re healing, you?re basically undoing the changes made through neuroplasticity through? neuroplasticity.
But where does letting go fit into all of this?
Letting go is a word used synonymously to forgiveness. Healing from painful experiences often requires you to eventually forgive ? either yourself, others, or just the circumstantial elements of the situation. Basically, forgiveness in healing is about detaching the emotional charge from the memory.
How to ?neuroplastify? your process of letting go:
When trauma creates a coping mechanism, your amygdala (part of the limbic system, often called the brain's fear center) becomes highly sensitized. It activates a strong, immediate neural pathway: Traumatic Trigger ? Amygdala ? Overwhelming Fear/Pain. This pathway is your brain trying to protect you by making the alarm bell extremely loud.
The process of "letting go" is the act of using the prefrontal cortex (PFC), your rational executive control center, to build a new, stronger, inhibitory pathway that dampens the amygdala?s alarm signal.
We achieve this through two core actions:
- Extinction: The Process of "Unlearning": This mechanism is the brain's way of learning that an established fear or pain response is no longer necessary. Your PFC is activated and sends a signal to the amygdala that the coast is clear, and that there is no need to activate the fight-or-flight response.
This new pathway doesn't erase the old traumatic connection, but it builds an override switch on top of it, effectively pressing the "mute" button on the alarm bell. Extinction occurs on its own when your brain encounters triggers like an event or a thought, but the trigger in this scenario is no longer followed by the associated harm. This eventually forms a new association where the trigger is no longer capable of conjuring harmful/maladaptive coping mechanisms and thoughts.

- Reconsolidation: The Process of "Rewriting": Neuroscience shows that when a painful memory is recalled, it becomes temporarily unstable, like opening a digital file for editing. This brief period is known as the reconsolidation window. This is the prime time for "letting go."
By recalling a painful memory and actively inserting a new, more neutral, or even empowering and positive meaning into it before it?s stored again, you are quite literally editing the neural connections. This is where the true power of forgiveness and narrative work lies. Forgiveness, from a neural perspective, is the PFC-driven decision to detach the painful, emotional charge from the facts of the event, thereby rewriting the memory's painful script.
How to Heal: A Neurological Perspective
To actively engage in your process of letting go, you must consistently engage in activities that strengthen the PFC?s control over the amygdala:
- Mindfulness and Meditation: These practices physically strengthen the PFC, improving its capacity for emotional regulation. When a painful thought arises, the PFC allows you to observe it without automatically reacting with panic or distress.
- Cognitive Reframing (Narrative Work): Actively work to change the story from "I am a victim of this event" to "I am a survivor who gained valuable strength and wisdom." This is your PFC attaching a new, non-painful context to the memory during the critical reconsolidation window.
- Safe, Gradual Exposure: Systematically confronting the reminders of the painful experience in a controlled environment to prove to your amygdala that the actual threat is gone, thus establishing and solidifying the extinction pathway.
Ultimately, letting go is not a single event, but the consistent, conscious construction of new neural pathways that lead away from distress and toward resilience.
